The XM5, now officially designated as the M7 rifle, is the latest addition to the U.S. Army's arsenal, stemming from the 2017 Next Generation Squad Weapon Program. This initiative arose from concerns regarding the 5.56 cartridge and the M4 platform's inability to effectively penetrate the advanced body armours of rival nations at extended ranges. Rather than retrofitting existing rifles, the NGSW contract was awarded to the XM5?s manufacturer, establishing a 10-year agreement to replace the longstanding M4, M249, and M240 platforms. Initially designated as the XM5, the rifle's name was later altered to XM7 (and eventually M7) to avoid trademark conflicts with Colt?s M5 carbine.
Manufactured by PRO W System, the XM5 rifle is faithfully replicated in a 13-inch gas blowback configuration, featuring a 13-inch outer barrel with a quick-detach Taper-lok style flash hider. Its 11-inch Spear Handguard is equipped with an M-LOK rail interface and a monolithic Picatinny upper rail, facilitating the attachment of peripheral and optical devices. Additional M-LOK layers accommodate various accessory angles and anti-rotational QD sockets for sling point mounting. The XM5?s receiver boasts fully ambidextrous fire controls, allowing both right- and left-handed users to transition seamlessly between their main and support hands for smooth weapon manipulation. At the rear, a Picatinny Rail Stock Interface enables users to install their preferred railed stocks or utilise the included 6-position folding buffer tube with the SL-M style stock, providing a stable point of contact for shouldering the rifle and enhancing accuracy. The rifle features sling point connections at both the handguard and rear receiver for 1- and 2-point sling attachments. Its GBB magazine adopts the translucent polymer L7AWM design aesthetic, marked with 7.62x51, and holds 30 rounds of 6mm BBs, offering ample firepower for skirmishes, comparable to most GBB rifles.
Constructed from CNC aluminium, the rifle is lightweight yet robust, with intricate detailing that mirrors its real steel counterpart. Utilising an ambi MWS-inspired system, many high-stress components are reinforced with steel parts, enhancing the longevity of critical elements such as the hammer, sears, bolt release, and pins, ensuring reliable performance over time. Interactive components, including the bolt release, magazine release, and fire selector, are designed for durability. With a steel bolt, the rifle delivers a surprisingly satisfying recoil experience, thanks to the unique bolt design, complemented by a crisp, short travel trigger wall for rapid trigger pulls. The imposing size of the rifle exudes an intimidating presence, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts of the NGSW rifle, particularly with its GBB system that enhances the overall play experience.
